In the demanding environment of specialized disability care, safety is the foundation of good work. At OYS Konsti, a center for advanced special services in Oulu, the 9Solutions personal safety system has changed the game. By using smart badges that show a staff member's exact location during an alert, teams can respond instantly to calls for help. This technology doesn't just prevent accidents; it gives healthcare professionals the freedom and confidence to focus on what they do best: caring for their patients.

OYS Center for Advanced Special Services – Experiences with 9Solutions

Work has become much smoother for Antto Korkala, a nurse at OYS Konsti, over the past few months. The reason? A new personal safety solution from 9Solutions.

"Everyone on shift has a phone that shows alerts, so you can go directly to help. Thanks to the personal safety buttons, we can move more freely and go anywhere in our facility," Korkala explains. The buttons are programmed to require a long press, which helps prevent accidental "false" alarms.

This change is part of the OYS2030 "Hospital of the Future" project. In these modern facilities, indoor positioning technology (location tracking) is used to improve safety and make daily life easier for both clients and staff.

A Reliable Alarm System as a Starting Point

Director Päivi Lauri helped design the new building with a focus on "user-first" needs. In specialized disability care, interaction challenges can sometimes lead to threatening or aggressive situations. A reliable way to call for backup is essential.

"Because some clients have difficulties with communication and behavior, we encounter threatening situations. That’s why we need a robust alarm system," says Pasi Moilanen, a nurse with over 15 years of experience in the field.

Clear and Fast Communication

The staff carry badges with two distinct functions:

  1. Emergency Call: Sends an immediate alert to the entire staff.
  2. Assistance Request: A non-urgent call sent only to the nurse’s specific team.

In the old system, every alert was a "full-blown" emergency. Now, staff can proactively ask for a little extra help before a situation escalates. When an alert does happen, the staff see the exact location on their phones.

"The best feature is the indoor positioning. You don't have to spend time searching for where the help is needed when an alarm goes off." — Antto Korkala, Nurse, OYS Konsti

A System That Grows with the Hospital

Director Lauri has been pleased with the partnership with 9Solutions, noting that the system is easy to use and was tailored to their specific needs. The modular nature of the technology means it can be adjusted as the hospital's needs change in the future.

"The system has met our needs perfectly. I can definitely recommend this to other organizations in similar fields," Lauri concludes.
